What I Do When I Feel Overwhelmed

It's easy to have a lot of things going on. Personally, I know I can get very stressed out when I look at my project management system and see a nearly infinite list of things to get done. I'm often met with a sense of hopelessness in these moments.

Recently, I've been trying to set myself up to shake away this stress and continue building my business. Here's a couple things that work for me:

  1. Don't think about the future. There's a lot of things we can and cannot control, and it doesn't make sense to waste any energy thinking about what you cannot control at this moment (unless you are in planning mode, see below). So just don't think about anything but what you are doing right now. This application of living in the present to your work can help you avoid the anxiety of what you still have to do by letting you draw energy from what you are doing at the moment.
  2. Plan on Sundays. Plan for your entire week on Sunday evening. If you're trying not to feel overwhelmed and you want to be working on actionable steps for your business beginning on Monday morning, you want to do all the planning for your week on the weekend. Then during the week, it's just execution mode and there's no looking at a list of 1,000 things to do wondering what you should do next.
  3. Work Out. When I started going to the gym, it didn't make sense that spending a couple hours away from work would help me get more done in a day, but I've seen that this is often times the case. We don't perform optimally when we're working 24/7, and getting a healthy routine of exercise into your lifestyle helps you perform at a higher level when you are working, and you actually end up getting more done than you would if you had spent those couple hours on your to-do list
